Lois Morton, a former art teacher for Katy ISD and Cy-Fair ISD, was the featured
artist at the co-op Green House Gallery for March.
The theme for the month at the co-op gallery was “Rites of Spring.” Morton displayed her new whimsical collages of a family of whooping cranes
feeding along the Gulf.
After a visit to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to view some of the 270 birds in their winter
habitat, Lois was inspired to create a mother, father and chick feeding among
the sand dunes and to donate a portion of her sales to the refuge.
The cranes eat blue crabs and clams, but food is scarce this
|
year due to the extended drought in south and west Texas. Because the rivers
aren
’t flowing enough fresh water to aide in the food supply, the birds need
supplemental food sources provided by the south Texas bird sanctuary. The
cranes will make their annual return at the end of March to Canada where they
nest.
Morton’s bird collages are colorful and fanciful. Her designs are created from a
variety of papers and textures printed in whimsical patterns. The finished
collages complement the use of recycled materials by other members of the co-op
and integrate well with the nature themes that appeal to many of the artists.
