Katy Naval Sea Cadet David Szabo, 18, received an appointment to the U.S. Naval
Academy at Annapolis, Md. Szabo has been a Navy Sea Cadet for four years, and
is currently a Petty Officer 2nd class.
“My Sea Cadet training really helped me get ready for my application to the Naval
Academy,
” Szabo said.
While in the Sea Cadets, Szabo attended advanced training courses in Mine
Warfare and Coast Guard training aboard the Cutter
Manta. In the latest class entering the Naval Academy, about 12 percent of the
midshipmen entering Annapolis were former Sea Cadets.
Szabo, whose goal is to be a
Navy Seal, attended a six-day summer
seminar at Annapolis.

Annapolis. Summer seminar is designed so
that potential midshipman can get a taste of Naval Academy life, while academy
representatives get an opportunity to see potential midshipman in action. At
the summer session, Cadet Szabo spent a full day in
“sea trials,” which included team building via boat races, mud pits, running obstacle courses
and other team sports.
“I got to steer a U.S. Coast Guard boat through different obstacles in the water,” Szabo said. “We were always busy doing one thing or another and the days were long. There
wasn
’t one part of it that didn’t like,” he concluded.
Summer session attendees also went to Arlington National Cemetery and saw the
U.S. Marine Corps
’ silent drill team in action.
Szabo, a student at Carnegie Vanguard High School, was nominated for his
appointment by 9th District U.S. House Representative Al Green.
