Shoulder Pain
Steven E. Nolan, M.D.
Does nagging shoulder pain affect your golf or tennis game? Does it ache when
you are working out or keep you awake at night? More than likely, it is not
going to go away on its own and trying to
“push through” the pain may even worsen the situation.
Shoulder pain can result from injuries or overuse. Rotator cuff injuries are
very common and start to occur and increase in the fourth and fifth decades of
life. Many people will lose their range of motion due to these injuries.
The best way to take care of shoulder pain is to see a board certified
orthopedic surgeon. A physical exam followed by an MRI is the most accurate way
to diagnose the problem. Treatment plans will vary but may include medications,
injections, physical therapy and possibly surgery. The advances in arthroscopic
surgery are amazing and not only will alleviate the problem but will allow for
a quick recovery and return to favorite sports and activities.
Dr. Steven E. Nolan is a fellowship trained, board certified orthopedic surgeon
with the Fondren Orthopedic group and is highly skilled in arthroscopic
surgery.

Timely Solutions for a Common
Condition in Women
The Image enhancement center
James H. Kern, M.D.
In many women—very often due to natural childbirth and the passage of time—there occurs a phenomenon called pelvic relaxation. In this situation, the
ligaments which suspend the uterus within the pelvis have stretched to the
point that they can no longer return to their normal length. This allows the
uterus to drop in the pelvis, and with it, the urinary bladder. The descent of
the uterus results in pelvic and low back discomfort, not usually severe;
however, the change of position of the bladder results in unexpected loss of
urine usually associated with coughing, sneezing or lifting. This is called
“Stress Incontinence.” It usually begins with very slight urine loss, which with the passage of time
and the worsening of the condition, can progress until a minor stress can
result in an evident and embarrassing loss of bladder control, which can only
be resolved with medical intervention.
This usually involves a re-suspension or removal of the uterus, depending on the
condition and desires of the patient, and the replacement of the bladder to a
position in which this urine loss will no longer occur. This is not minor
surgery; however, it is a common procedure, and it helps to reverse this
undesirable result of the passage of time.
For a consultation, call Dr. Kern at 281-599-8900.
