When Stephen Chong was five years old he made a poster for a school assignment entitled, “all about me.” On the artwork, Stephen portrayed himself as a soldier and a doctor.
Stephen, now 16, recently pulled out that poster and smiled to himself that some things never change. He still plans a lifelong career as an Army officer and neurologist. And he ’s good at keeping promises.
For instance, when he joined Cub Scouts 10 years ago he knew he was in it for the long haul.
“My father initiated me at first. As a Cub Scout it’s all about making friends and games. Adults do everything for you. Then, in Boy Scouts it ’s more boy led. You develop character. You give back to the community.
“It is who I’ve become. Scouting laid down a foundation of moral ethics on how to live my life, ” said Stephen.
Only 5 percent of all Boy Scouts earn the impressive rank of Eagle Scout, and the average age is 17. It is common for boys to age out of scouts after achieving this milestone or they just get too busy to continue.

Eagle Scout at age 15. He is now a 16-year-old junior at Seven Lakes High School and is about as busy as one person can be. And, he has the accomplishments to prove it. In the athletic department, Stephen is on the track and field and cross country teams. Two years ago he earned a third degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.
He also excels in the school band. Stephen plays the tuba and is a member of Texas All-State Band, and he received a school award for Outstanding Brass Musician.
His leadership awards fill his resume, too. Stephen is an officer for the National Honor Society, and received a school leadership award as a freshman. The Katy Elks Lodge awarded him Teenager of the Month last spring.
And yet, among all his activities and accomplishments, Stephen remains active in Boy Scout Troop 584 in Katy, a large troop of about 150 boys. In fact, he received the Gold Palm award, which recognizes staying active in the unit for at least three months after becoming an Eagle Scout, earning at least five additional merit badges and taking part in a scoutmaster conference.
“It’s really time consuming. But
it’s also important to give back,” said Stephen.
Stephen has the same “giving back” attitude toward joining the military. His goal is to be accepted to West Point, the United States Military Academy, and then serve the nation as an army officer and physician. His back up plan is to attend an Ivy League school and enroll in ROTC, with the intention of joining the military after college.
Stephen’s role models include his grandfather, who is a retired rear admiral in the Korean army, and his dad, Casey, who was a sergeant in Korean Augmentation to the United States Army (KATUSA).
If Stephen had a school assignment today to draw an “all about me” poster he’d have to smile to himself because it would include a snapshot of his grandfather and father in military gear and Stephen as an adult in an officer ’s uniform with a stethoscope around his neck. He plans to keep his promise.
