celebrate 70 years
of katy football
The Friday night lights will shine down on Jan. 16 as Katy High School celebrates 70 years of football memories. Former players, cheerleaders, drill team members, managers, trainers and band members are invited to A Night Of Champions —Seventy Years of Katy High School Football at the Red Oak Ballroom at the brand-new CityCentre at 7 p.m.
The semi-formal event is aimed at bringing together alumni of the football culture to rekindle friendships and remember the glory days. Old game films, guest speakers and prizes are sure to please. The Tiger Den will be home to dueling pianos where guests can dance, enjoy a cash bar and buffet and meet football heroes from the past. Vintage cars will be on display, decorated, of course, in Katy High School ’s colors.

barry sea paradox performs
The Barry Sea Paradox performs every Saturday from 8 p.m.-midnight at the Mercury Bar in Cinco Ranch. Mercury Bar is a martini jazz lounge with an emphasis on artisan beer and wines.
One of Texas’ hottest groups, the Barry Sea Paradox has a hit smooth jazz CD that’s received lots of radio airplay. The group features long-time Katy residents Barry and Bobbie Sea (Siegel). They ’ve appeared at many of Texas’ finest clubs playing music they describe as smooth jazz with a rough edge called soul.
The Mercury Bar is located at 22756 Westheimer Parkway, Ste. 190, between Mason Road and Grand Parkway in the Villagio Town Center.

Upcoming Scheduled Events from the Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center for the months of January and February are:  
KVPAC’s Encore Players Drama Dog Headshot Contest, Jan. 1-30. A special photo contest promoting the upcoming play,
Sylvia. Send in your dog’s best photo for the Encore Players Drama Dog Headshot Contest. Enter to win by sending a high-resolution jpeg close-up of your dog or drop off an 8X10 at KVPAC. All submissions must be received by Jan. 30. Photos will be displayed in KVPAC ’s theater lobby and audience
members will vote during intermission at each performance of Sylvia. One winner will be declared at the close of the production and will receive a special doggie prize basket.
KVPAC’s Encore Players Sylvia Dog Food Drive will be held Jan. 9-Feb. 20. Encore Players will host the Sylvia Dog Food Drive on behalf of area dog rescue organizations. Sylvia audience members are asked to bring canned or dry dog food to the box office and receive $2 off the
ticket price of admission at the door. (Discount does not apply to advance/on-line sales).
Attend KVPAC’s Family Art Workshop: Monster Pinata on Jan. 22 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.; and Frank the Monster is set for Feb. 6. The workshops are based on a featured book followed by an activity as noted. A parent must attend with child. Parents are fee; $15 per child  and $10 per sibling. Register online at www.kvpac.org.
Sylvia will be performed on Feb. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 from 8 p.m.-10 p.m. A romantic comedy about a husband, wife and the free-spirited dog who comes between them.
A Valentine’s Day performance of Sylvia from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. A special Valentine’s Day matinee performance. Share The Love – Dog Adoption Day on Feb. 14 from noon-6 p.m. Encore Players has partnered with the Katy-area rescue organization, Zeke Animal Rescue Fund, to showcase dogs in need of loving homes.

Nottingham Country Garden Club will feature Landscaping Design by Carol Brouwer, Ph.D., on Jan. 7. The Feb. 4 meeting will feature Orchids by Jim Butler. Meet and greet time begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program will start at 10 a.m., followed by the NCGC meeting at the Municipal Utility Bldg. No. 81 at 805 Hidden Canyon Drive in Katy. kold radio, whitefish bay,
beginning jan. 8
Theatre Suburbia’s third production of the season, Kold Radio, Whitefish Bay will run Jan. 8-Feb. 6.
This is the Houston premiere of this romantic comedy by Phil Olson. Lars is the host of a radio show called Crappie Talk, devoted entirely to the subject of ice fishing. Martha hosts Book Beat and has all the listeners and advertisers. When Lars loses his only advertiser and his fish-out-of-water Brooklyn Italian boss fires him, he has his work cut out for him. He needs his job and his dignity, but more importantly, he needs Martha.
Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m; and Sundays (Jan. 24 and Jan. 31) at 3 p.m. Tickets are $14, adults; $13, students and seniors; and $12, Sundays. sparkles & spurs Houston Metro Go Texan fundraiser, Jan. 9
The premier fundraising effort, Sparkles & Spurs, will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at The Tuscany Villa, 3330 FM 1463. The Houston Metro Go Texas Committee Katy has a fun evening planned to raise scholarship funds for Katy youth.
Dinner will be provided by Outback Steakhouse, Katy, and dessert by The Original Marini ’s Empanada House. There will be entertainment and dancing to the music of Al White & The Chaparral Band. Cost is $40 per person. For more information, call Karen Winkler at 281-782-2401.

mothers’ share group, thursdays
Mothers’ Share Group is a valuable support system for stay-at-home moms offering programs relevant to parenting and family life. Weekly meetings throughout the school year feature informative speakers, creative crafts, group service projects and social time with other moms. Child care is provided.  
Meetings are held each Thursday from 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church (Room E221), 20775 Kingsland Blvd. in Katy.

Pre-ap/ap parent night, jan. 14
Morton Ranch High School will host a Pre-AP/AP Parent Night on Jan. 14 from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. in the Commons. This will be a come and go event. Parents can meet the Pre-AP/AP teachers and learn about the curriculum.

Katy Area Artists offer Mentoring sessions,
second thursday of the month
Solo exhibitions of Katy Area Artists will be featured at the free-standing Starbucks locations in Katy. Future shows at Katy Mills Mall will be shown on the art league ’s Web site.
KAA will also be holding mentoring sessions each month. Professional and semi-professional KAA artists and art teachers will mentor other artists using an artwork critique format. This activity is planned for the second Thursday of each month at the Cinco Ranch Library from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Seating is limited, so artists should sign up for mentoring. Katy Area Artists will host its local LSAG open art competition on Jan. 30. Artists from within the Lone Star Art Guild member leagues, KAA members, and local artists are invited to compete. The five divisions include both adult and high school students, as well as adult non-professional, semi-professional and professional artists. The Katy Library has exciting events and activities planned during the month of January.
Club Hispano de Libros will meet on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. at Café del Sol. This group of Spanish speaking adults gets together on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss a book. The selection for January is El Vencedor está Solo by Paulo Coelho.
The Who Dun It? Mystery Group will meet on Jan. 2 at 10:30 a.m. Mystery fans get together on the first Saturday of each month to discuss their reading. January ’s selection is The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon.
Weekly Programs at the library include: Baby Bounce on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. This is an active storytime for infants 3-18 months.
Bilingual Storytime is held every Monday at 2 p.m. This program features stories for young children, moms and dads to share the fun of reading in another language.
Toddler Time is a fun program for children 18 months to 3 years and is held every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Preschool Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and is recommended for children 3 to 6 years old. Children enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays and occasional crafts.
The Knitting and Crochet Club meets each Wednesday at 1 p.m. Learn new techniques, teach someone else, or just hang out with other crafters. All ages are welcome.
Basic Internet Classes are held every Thursday at 11a.m. Learn the fundamentals of using the Internet. The last Thursday of the month will feature some of the library ’s special databases on subjects such as genealogy, magazines, homework help, health information and more.
Job Search Seminar Series: Resumes will be held on Jan. 12 at 10:30 a.m. Presented by Workforce Solutions, this session focuses on how to create an effective resume. Register at the Katy Library.
Job Search Seminar Series: Creating References, Cover Letters and Thank You Letters will be held on Jan. 26 at 10:30 a.m. Register at the Katy Library.
The Hispanic Writers Group will meet on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. This program, conducted in Spanish, is designed to encourage writing in all forms.
