Mayde Creek HS teachers and staff celebrate Earth Day.
MaydeCreek HS Recycles - Staff and teachers at Mayde Creek High School wore T-shirts to celebrate Earth
Day. The T-shirts were sold by
environmental science teacher and campus recycling coordinator Lynn Paulsen to raise funds for the Jacob Neurauter Environmental Science Scholarship.
This award goes to a deserving senior entering college to study in the field of
biology or the applied sciences.

Katy Naval Sea Cadets Work the Ropes at McKinney Roughs - Sixteen members of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets, Katy Division, challenged their
physical and mental toughness in a ropes course at the Lower Colorado River
Authority
’s McKinney Roughs Nature Preserve in Bastrop, Texas.
Lt. Clifford Borgstedt, commanding officer of the Katy Division, said, “We are very appreciative of the LCRA for their help in this drill. The LCRA
instructors and staff were tremendous to work with, and working the challenging
elements of their ropes course was a great opportunity for our Sea Cadets.
”
Sea Cadets, the unit’s officers and some of the cadet’s parents challenged themselves on three climbing walls, a zip line, balance
beam, traversing cable and an element called a giant
’s ladder, which is a large ladder with rungs spaced 4 to 5 feet apart. The rungs
get further apart as the climber gets closer to the top. Designed as a two-
person device, the giant
’s ladder was one of the most popular elements at the ropes course.

Pinewood Derby Champion - John Searle won first place overall in the 2009 Texas Skies District Pinewood Derby. The
2009 derby was held at Katy High School
where more than 120 Cub Scouts qualified to participate in the race. Each
participant in the derby won first, second or third place in a previous race in
his Cub Scout Pack to qualify for this race. John represented Pack 239. He is a
Cub Scout Bear and calls his championship car The Red Racer.
Lady Mavericks Track and Field Results - The Lady Maverick Track Team received second overall at the district meet with
147 total points, and a total of 10 regional qualifiers.
Placing in the Field events are: Pole Vault – first, Megan Burciaga (regional qualifier); Shot Put – first, Nicole Benton (regional qualifier); Discus – first, Nicole Benton (regional qualifier); sixth, Dominique Jasmin; Long Jump – second, Tiana Dockery (regional qualifier); Triple Jump – fourth, Tiana Dockery; and High Jump – sixth, Sydney Mullings.
Taking top honors in track events are: 4x100 – third, Raven McClure, Tamyra Mensah, Tatiana Bryant, Kenya Walker (regional qualifiers); 800 – second, Tiana Dockery (regional qualifier), fourth Jasmin Hawkins; 100m – second, Christina Walker (regional qualifier); 4x200 – first, Tamyra Mensah, Kenya Walker, Tatiana Bryant, Christina Walker (regional
qualifiers); 400
– first, Tiana Dockery (regional qualifier); second, Fatima Barrie (regional qualifier); fifth Jasmin Hawkins; 300 hurdles – third, Raven McClure (regional qualifier); 200 – third, Fatima Barrie (regional qualifier); 4x100 – first (breaking their own Katy ISD record), Jasmin Hawkins, Fatima Barrie,
Christina Walker and Tiana Dockery (regional qualifiers).

Seven Lakes HS Adopt a Beach Trip - A group of 39 Seven Lakes High School students traveled to Galveston Island to
participate in the Texas Adopt-a-Beach program. The group spent several hours
walking the beach and collecting garbage bags full of trash and debris, and
used
tally sheets to keep track of the different kinds of trash to help the State of
Texas know what is being washed ashore on the beaches.
This trip was sponsored by the SLHS Student Council and Spartans Out Serving.

Seven Lakes High School students participate in the Texas Adopt-a-Beach program
in Galveston.
The Mayde Creek Choir at a dude ranch in Bandera, Texas, where they enjoyed a
weekend of team leadership activities.
Mayde Creek HS Choir Wins Big at UIL Competition - Mayde Creek High School’s choir department had five ensembles receive Sweepstakes Trophies at the UIL
competition in April. The MCHS choral department then traveled to San Antonio
for another music festival where the four ensembles competing brought home top
awards (superior ratings) and Overall Outstanding in Class trophies.
