What type of art can you hang on a large foyer wall that is both bold and warmly
organic? In the case of these homeowners, a stroll through a marble yard
provided the answer.
“I saw it and just had to have it,” says the homeowner referring to a giant slab of Golden Rainforest marble that
adorns the structurally reinforced foyer wall.
“I was looking through the yard, picking out marble for countertops and things
like that and I ran across this wonderful slab. To my husband and me it
’s like a beautiful, warm and visually striking piece of art. And permanent, I’d say! It’s not going anywhere!”
The eclectic wall art is one of many standout features in this contemporary home
constructed by builder Carl Goshy. The couple
’s previous two homes were starkly traditional, but a residual California
influence always beckoned.
“We lived in California for eight years and very much took note of that
architecture,
” she says of her home, a stucco dwelling with clay tiled roof. On the outside,
huge marble panels flank a double front door in exotic zebrawood, a clue to the
interesting mix within.
Her husband drew up the floorplans and specifications, handing them off to the
builder. Houston interior designers Denise Schneider and William Egerton, the
team on their previous homes, were recruited for this one as well, ferreting
out materials, furnishings and lighting to meet the couple
’s vision.
“They were leaving a very traditional home and wanted more of a modern mix in
this venue,
” says Egerton. “So we chose
A large slab of granite that the homeowners fell in love with wound up as wall
art. The wall was specially reinforced during construction to handle the
massive piece. All of the home
’s granite, including this piece, was purchased from Houston’s Midwest Tile Marble & Granite.
