Treasured pieces purchased at the festival or commissioned from participating
artists are found throughout the home
—two modern blown glass head sculptures by artist, Andrew Noga, keep each other
company on a buffet in the dining room; a blue glass torso by artist Alexis
Silk sits on the family room coffee table; a bronze pear sculpture, the
“Dancing Mandolin,” by James La Casse makes a bold statement on a table behind the sofa. A
wonderful acrylic sculpture in cobalt blue adorns the front foyer, a companion
to other glass pieces sitting atop a sleek, black grand piano. The acrylic
sculpture was purchased from artist Rod Garrett, the featured artist at last
year
’s arts festival.
“All of these pieces are wonderful. I enjoy living with them, looking at them
every day,
” says the homeowner.
The couple downsized from 11,000 to 5,000 square feet. “Still a sizable house, but one that makes sense for us,” she says. “We loved our home. It was beautiful, classic. But we felt moving into a smaller
house required a cleaner look to give the feeling of spaciousness. We
’re really enjoying the clean lines. We wanted less clutter. It’s a look that appeals to us.”
Moving was an adventure. Their home sold more quickly than expected and
construction on the new house hadn
’t started. So the couple stored belongings and took up residence in an apartment
until move-in time. Then came the challenge, editing through belongings to
determine what would stay. Some furnishings and items went to family, others to
friends, acquaintances and charity. Some cherished pieces remained, providing
balance for the new environment.

Family converged on the new home for Christmas 2008, gathering in the family
room, as that
’s the only space that had furniture. Newly ordered Donghia furniture had just
arrived. A loaner refrigerator was installed the day before.
“We got to sample the house, then retreated to the apartment. We moved in
full-force in January, after the holidays and we
’ve been at home here ever since,” the homeowner says. “We absolutely love this place.”
An especially sweet spot in this home is the loggia, a favorite hangout for the
grandkids. Giant glass paneled Vista Pointe doors recede into the walls at the
touch of a button, letting the outdoors in and providing instant access to the
pool.
“It’s the most popular room in the house when they visit,” she says. “And it’s just wonderful to let the outside in at the touch of a remote.”
Indeed, this home is full of wonderful spaces including her husband’s home office upstairs, two guest bedrooms, an upstairs kitchenette and laundry,
and a small room reserved for the grandchildren
’s Nintendo Wii game system.
A craft room with coin rubber floor off the downstairs master bathroom comes in
handy as well, as does a sleek bar for entertaining off of the family room. The
master bedroom with sitting area has easy access to the outdoor pool and hot
tub.
“This design really works well for us,” says the homeowner, who loves their new contemporary dwelling. “We had a vision and it was fun to see it come together. And I think it’s a great home for our art.”l
