West Memorial Junior High Students Crash Test Dummies in Science Lab - Seventh-graders at West Memorial Junior High participated in a science lab in
which they demonstrated and investigated the law of inertia.
The students worked in groups of at least three children. The crash test dummy
operator would release the car at the starting line. The timer would start the
stopwatch when the car and dummy were released by the operator, and stop the
watch when the car hit the barrier at the end of the line. The measurer would
measure the distance from the barrier that the dummy was thrown, and the
recorder would record the time it took for the car to reach the barrier and the
distance the dummy flew from the car. Using a special formula, they would
calculate the car
’s speed in each trial. The end of lab graph showed the speed of the car versus
the distance the dummy was thrown.
